Launched on 24 September 1969 by Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao, who was the Educational Minister at that time, the National Service Scheme (NSS) is an addition of activities in the higher education system of India with the aim of allowing students to develop their personality by providing community service while they are studying. The scheme comes under the protection of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.

Students under the NSS must put in 2 years of services along with their studies. Under the scheme, students must provide 120 hours of service every year as well as participate in at least one special camp programme.

Objectives

  • The main goal of the NSS is education via community service and community services via education.

  • Understand the community in which they work

  • Understand themselves in relation to their community

  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving

  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility

  • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems

  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities

  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration and social harmony

Motto

  1. The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is: ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’.

  2. The expression stands for two things.

  • For getting and surrendering the Self, and

  • Rendering selfless service for others.

​The word “Not” before ‘me’ is to reduce the self to enhance the importance of others. The abridged expression “Not me but You” can be simply expanded as follows: I do not live for me but for you. The world is not only for me but for you also.

NSS Symbol

The symbol of the National Service Scheme, is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

NSS Badge

The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. The red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

Constitution

1. The NSS Committee of the college consists of 12 members headed by President and Vice President.2. The NSS Committee meeting will be convened by Chairperson or Programme Officer of NSS.

3. Any student of degree classes will be eligible to enrol in NSS as volunteer

4. The duration of NSS volunteers will be 120 hours per year for two consecutive years and 7 days of special camping,

5. NSS volunteer who has completed 240 hours of regular activities in the period of 2 years and attended one annual special camp of 7 days will be issued an NSS certificate by the college.

Classification of NSS Program

NSS activities have been divided in two major groups. These are regular NSS activities and special camping programme.

1. Regular NSS Activity: Under this, students undertake various programmes in the adopted villages, college campuses and urban slums during weekends or after college hours. Duration of these services is 120 hours.

2. Special Camping Programme: Under this, camps of 7 days duration are organised in adopted villages or urban slums during vacations with some specific projects by involving local communities. 50% NSS volunteers are expected to participate in these camps.

: National Cadet Corps (NCC) for our students which propagates national unity,integrity ,leadership qualities and discipline amongst youth .It emphasis on practical training ,outdoor training and training as a community.It has wide and future prospects scope for the young aspirants .
